In honour of Talk like a Pirate Day...
We would like to teach you some amazing new words to add to your dictionary. Use them today to impress all your pirate-y mateys. Let’s start our lesson
Ahoy means hello or hey . Use this to greet your friends or maybe teach it to your parrot. It's entirely possible this might start your official life as a pirate!
Avast ye before you continue! Avast means ‘ stop ’ or ‘ pay attention ’. If your captain tells you to ‘ avast ’ while running around on your ship, drop whatever you’re doing and pay attention!
If you don’t do that… you might suddenly shiver ye timbers when the captain calls out your name!
Now… shiver me timbers is a sentence pirates (especially on the internet) often use when they want to show you that they are definitely not scared by whatever it is that made them react like that…
You can also see it as something you'd yell if your dog or cat is standing in the middle of the hallway at 3 am again.
Matey means buddy or friend (but for the sea). It's almost the same as calling someone your "good time boy".
Last but not least, Landlubbers ! Landlubber is a funny way to call someone who is not (yet) skilled enough to be called a pirate. Do you have that one friend who hasn't played Blazing Sails yet? Then you can call them a Landlubber !
Now, since you pirates have all been waiting for treasure and gold, there is something new on the horizon.
