Adventures

Darkheart of the Wood and The Red Road are available for purchase in the store for $9.99US each. Those who backed these adventures will have received a code by email. If you are an MCDM Patron, make sure your account is linked to the Codex and you will receive the adventures for free.

You must be an MCDM Patron as of now to get the adventures as part of being a Patron.

New Features

  • Pick your adventures when starting a campaign: When you start a campaign, you can now choose which of your adventures it starts with. Load The Delian Tomb, Dark Heart of the Wood and The Red Road together, pick just some of them, or start with none.
  • Add maps from your other games: Creating a map now has a Your Other Games option. Use it to bring a map straight in from another of your games.
  • Reset Settings: Settings now has a Reset Settings... button. It lists every setting you've changed from its default, and you can revert any or all of them. If something is behaving strangely and you think a setting might be the cause, check here first.
  • Blood spatters: An optional setting adds blood spatter to the map, to redden the Red Road!
  • Flammable Oil: Flammable Oil is now available as a DTO.
  • Line of sight across floors: Line of sight is now calculated for shots between different floors.
  • Monsters Climb on the Ceiling. Monsters that have Climb movement can climb on the ceiling. Just climb them all the way up to the ceiling and then climb again and they will be on the ceiling! Their token will turn upside down to show they are on the ceiling and they'll dangle there. If you move them somewhere that doesn't support climbing (for instance away from the wall they climbed up) and try to climb down they'll fall down (hopefully onto some unsuspecting players!) instead.

Animals

  • The Animal Builder has had a visual refresh.
  • All animal traits are now implemented.
  • The animal trait builder on the character sheet has a new layout.
  • An animal's character sheet now shows the traits you selected in its Features section.
  • When the Director places an animal on the map, they're now asked to choose its traits.

Classes & Abilities

  • Null: From 3rd level, Psionic Leap now replaces the Jump move.
  • Fury: The 5th-level ability My Turn! now lets you choose whether to spend a Recovery, instead of spending it automatically.
  • Summoner:
  • Strike For Me now correctly spends the resource from the trigger that caused it.
  • Explosive Parade now correctly lets only one minion explode and push.
  • When a Summoner minion's Free Strike allows a typed damage, it can now choose untyped damage instead.

Retainers & Summoner minions:

  • They can now use Mentor and Summoner surges.
  • They can now spend surges to increase potency.

Fixes & Improvements

  • Audio uploads: Some audio files, such as .mp3 downloads from YouTube or Discord that are really a different format, used to upload as silent 0:00 tracks. Codex now converts them automatically, so they play at the correct length.
  • Launchable Panels now scale correctly with font size.

Additional Changes

New & Improved

  • Codex Library: A new Library entry in the Codex menu lists the PDFs that come with your modules. Adventure PDFs purchased from the in-app store, can be saved to disk.
  • Blood: Fire, acid, cold, corruption and lightning damage leave their own marks on the map, and corpses leave a pool of blood. Monsters and ancestries have their own blood colors, and you can pick a creature's blood on its Appearance tab. Show Blood is a Director setting, and each player can opt out with the new Hide Blood & Gore setting.
  • Footprints: Monsters and ancestries now leave footprints that match their feet, including a new Talons style.
  • Fire: Burning Oil zones and burning creatures now show flames.
  • Map grid: Grid lines now follow terrain, platforms and staircases instead of floating flat over the map.
  • Map Markup: A new Stairs tool in the Props tab lets creatures walk up and down between floors.
  • Map sizing: Map bounds are now measured from the placed map images, which fixes imported maps that came out one tile off. Map settings have a new Reimport Map Sizing button.
  • Targeting: The attack cross-section diagram now works for targets on other floors, and the targeting arrow is dashed where it passes under an overhang.
  • Save rolls: The save roll dialog now shows Fail/Save tiers, the result and any modifiers. Hero Tokens can be spent to Succeed Instead.
  • Lucky complication: Now fully implemented, including the Hero Token refund on a 6+.
  • Roll dialog: Surges are only offered on rolls that deal damage. The dialog respects the Transparency setting, and a damage type choice can differ per target.
  • Characteristics: Hero characteristics are now capped at 5, with a tooltip explaining why.
  • Loot: Dead creatures now drop their leveled items and equipped trinkets.
  • Triggers: A trigger prompt left unanswered now counts as a dismissal.
  • Concealment: The token status icon now says where Concealment came from. Creatures immune to Concealment are no longer concealed by zones, terrain or invisibility.
  • Monster AI: Goblins now use their Malice abilities (Swamp Stink, Goblin Mode and Tiny Stabs).
  • Journal: Text in a language your character doesn't know is now scrambled, so it can't be decoded from the font.
  • Map library: Browsing now mixes creators and themes, and favors popular maps and maps with markup.
  • MCDM Encounter Maps pack: Added maps from The Condemned and The Red Road, and improved grid alignment on several maps.
  • Store: Adventures are listed first. Adventure pages show the adventure's cast and what's inside.
  • Store: Removed the Auto Install option. Store modules you own are no longer installed into every game you run, which makes games load faster and stops stray content (such as extra pregens) appearing.
  • Modules: You can now star modules as Favorites, and favorites are offered when you create a campaign.
  • Patreon: Linking a Patreon account that is already linked to another Codex account now asks you to confirm before moving it. The title screen tells you when Patreon rewards have been added to your inventory.
  • Map buttons can now show an alert marker when they need attention, such as the Gnoll Army hazard in The Red Road.
  • Bug reports now include which settings you've changed from the defaults, to help us diagnose problems.
  • Audio: Hit sounds and healing sounds are quieter, and condition sounds are slightly delayed.

Homebrew & Editors

  • Invoked abilities can now override the invoked ability's targeting.
  • New Ignore Bane On Ranged Adjacent modifier.
  • Environmental keywords can apply an effect when a creature enters or starts its turn in them, and can grant map-wide features. There is also a new Transform Zone behavior.
  • Effects from environmental abilities now read "Applied by name ".

Classes, Monsters & Items

  • Censor (Oracle): Prescient Grace can now be triggered manually.
  • Conduit: Sun Domain and Nature Domain Piety no longer share a single once-per-encounter charge. Creation Domain now shows the correct implementation status.
  • Elementalist: Subvert the Green Within can now target any creature. Untyped damage no longer grants Essence, and persistent abilities no longer double-count "Essence at Start".
  • Summoner: Later-level features no longer override earlier characteristic increase options.
  • Beastheart: Added the missing Rampant Shield treasure.
  • Critical hits: Invoked strikes (e.g. Beastheart strikes, Panther's Devastating Rush ) can now score critical hits.
  • Ringing Strike now grants its edge only to strikes.
  • Bleeding: Monster Free Strikes now also trigger the Stamina loss.
  • Mundane complication: The bane no longer fires at exactly 3 magic treasures.
  • Mirror Token and G'Allios Visiting Card now grant their triggers while carried.
  • Auras once again reach creatures above and below them.
  • "Until End of Turn" effects applied between turns (such as by a Director-triggered object) now expire at the next turn, not the next round.
  • Walking Boulder: Obstruct now blocks enemy line of effect.
  • War Dogs: The Arachnite Web Vial now works, and the Loyalty Collar is fixed on minions.
  • Creeping Sludge: Corrode now escalates, Oozen Grasp is unlimited, and Split is implemented.
  • Nixie Soakreed: Fixed its aura.
  • Orc Relentless and other death-triggered abilities no longer hang for 5 minutes when the creature is removed.
  • Fixed Snare Trap and Flammable Oil issues, the Gnoll Death Circle description and the Arixx Soft Underbelly text. Condition descriptions and some talent text have been cleaned up.

Combat, Encounters & Maps

  • Fixed grouped squads creating a duplicate initiative entry that could stop the round from advancing.
  • Encounter Builder: Save no longer stays disabled after a rename, and Run Encounter now appears after placing monsters.
  • Encounters that list a deleted monster no longer break.
  • Monsters spawned from the Bestiary onto high ground are now placed on the ground.
  • Lowering terrain outside combat now moves tokens down to the new ground instead of making them fall (and die).
  • Maps using WebP images now have proper object outlines and floors, so tokens no longer fall through them.
  • You can now hover creatures below through holes, and hole objects work correctly after reloading a map.
  • Door icons no longer vanish on imported maps.
  • Fixed a freeze of up to several minutes when using Zone Edge Fade.
  • Object aura labels now stay on their outline on raised ground.
  • The movement cross-section no longer reveals hidden markup zones to players.
  • Dice rolled from an ultrawide window no longer land off other players' screens.

Journal & UI

  • Present to Players now works for item and loot cards.
  • A module's cover document is shown once per game, not every time you start.
  • Unsaved work is saved when a popped-out window is closed. Dragging a popped-out window's tab strip no longer closes it.
  • Font Size now applies to the journal editor and the compendium.
  • Folders in the journal tree stay expanded after saving, and closing a tab no longer rolls the window up.
  • Fixed edits being overwritten, embedded documents not refreshing, and secret-text coloring.
  • Very long documents no longer display blank.
  • Page-embed autocomplete no longer turns an embed into a link or suggests the page you're editing.
  • Players no longer see the Director-only Downtime Projects panel.
  • Request Rolls status text no longer overlaps rows.
  • Long game descriptions in the Join Game dialog now scroll, so the Join button stays visible.
  • Mac: The map no longer drifts left after Cmd+A or copy/paste.

Performance & Stability

  • Games load faster: loading no longer waits for object thumbnails or auto-installs store modules.
  • Fixed cases where Codex could get stuck on the loading screen forever after a stalled download or a damaged install.
