OpenFront is heading to Steam Early Access in Q3 2026 — here's what's coming.

Steam is coming.
Big news: OpenFront is launching on Steam Early Access in Q3 2026.
OpenFront already has a home in the browser, and the community has gone further than we ever imagined — over 200,000 players jump into a match every single day. Bringing the game to Steam isn't about starting over; it's about meeting all of you on the platform where so many of you already live, with wishlists, achievements, a proper store page, and everything that comes with it.
Why Steam, why Early Access?
The browser version isn't going anywhere — it stays free and fully playable, exactly as it is today. Steam opens a second front: a dedicated client, easier discovery for new players, and a direct line to the millions of people who use Steam to find their next strategy obsession.
We're going in as Early Access because that's how OpenFront has always been built — in the open, fast, and shaped by the people actually playing it. We'd rather ship updates with you in the room than disappear and hand you a "finished" game a year from now .But a native Steam client lets us push things the browser simply can't:
- Higher performance — running outside the constraints of a browser tab means we can squeeze more out of your hardware
- Lower load times — game assets live on your machine instead of being pulled down every session
- A clean, ad-free experience — no banners, no interruptions, just the game
What's coming
Over the next few months, expect a steady drip of:
- Teasers — first looks at what the Steam build brings to the table
- New merch — fresh gear for the people who've been repping OpenFront from day one
- Development live streams — watch the game come together in real time, ask questions, and tell us when we've got it wrong
- More announcements — plenty we're not ready to spill just yet
Built on a faster engine
If the game has felt noticeably smoother lately, that's not your imagination. We recently completed one of the biggest technical overhauls in OpenFront's history: migrating our rendering from Canvas to WebGL.
It's the kind of change you don't see directly, but you feel in every match. Moving to WebGL hands the heavy lifting to your GPU instead of grinding it out on the CPU, which means higher and more stable frame rates, smoother panning and zooming across massive maps, and far better performance when the board is packed with players and units. It's a foundation we can keep building on — and it's a big part of what makes a dedicated Steam client worth it.
Be part of it
The best place to keep up with everything — and get involved directly — is our Discord. Announcements drop there first, teasers land early, and the community lives there around the clock.
