Devlog #2 - Boxy's Courier Handbook Vol. 2

Your First Delivery! How exciting!
Last time, we covered most of the basics a courier should know - you, your home, your workplace, and all that jazz. While they were awesome to see, nothing is more exciting than sending you off to your first-ever delivery!
Now this is where the fun begins! Let's get started!
Rise and shine, Courier.
Once more, you find yourself in your pod, Courier! Not that I wish to imply you've been sleeping on the job, but today's the day - you're first delivery!
But wait! How do you get to your very first delivery? Simple: head on over to the Mission Control Room!
Now, I know it's tempting to stay in the lobby, settle into a bar stool, and enjoy your morning beverage... but you're a Courier. And Couriers love making deliveries far more than they love relaxing. At least, according to the Employee Satisfaction Department.
Well, would you look at that, you already know where to look! Correct - start by using the Mission Selector Terminal!
The Pre-Mission!
At the Mission Selector Terminal, you'll be able to choose where your very first package is headed along with every package you'll deliver after that. Better yet, you also get to decide what kind of delivery mission you'd like to take on.
Now that's what we call caring for our employees! Where else can you find a job that lets you choose what to do and how to do it? Pretty neat, isn't it?
For your first delivery, we'll choose Ruinland and do a Standard Delivery - just so it's easier for all of us. Sigh, I'll never get tired of hearing that tune when "Delivery Accepted" shows up. Gives me the chills!
Onwards to the Pre-Mission Area! Remember - survival is your 2nd-most priority, so make sure you're ready for your first delivery! If I were you - I'd go to the Shop first.
As part of the New Employee Onboarding Program, you are bestowed with 50 Speetchy - which you can either use to buy yourself some drinks in the bar (not true) or maybe a Crowbar for your first delivery. We highly recommend choosing the 2nd option. Unlike your precious human life, the drinks aren't going anywhere.
Oh, and don't forget to put them in your loadout! Don't worry if you don't see it in your inventory for now; it'll be there once you arrive at the mission area.
Every courier needs sustenance, and as part of training you to be fully satiated before a mission, a Banana plant is placed right next to shop. Take note though - all bananas brought to the truck will be dropped in transit, but don't fret, we placed a Banana plant in the Truck as well.
And it's time to go, Courier! Head over to the most awesome Truck with the Blimp. Since I'm assuming you're alone in your first delivery mission, no one else will drive you but yourself - remember that!
The First Delivery!
And now you arrive at Ruinland. What a sight for sore eyes, right? Not that you'll have one with the state-of-the-art mask we equipped you with!
Speaking of state-of-the-art, you'll notice once you're out of the truck that it has already set up your mission base for you. This is where you'll find a shop outlet, gear you purchased back in the Pre-mission area, and of course - the package.
Remember - the package must be kept pristine throughout the mission. You don't wanna receive a badly-damaged package now, would you? So keep that lovely smile on the box smiling!
While it will be different for every other Mission, the delivery experience will be familiar because of three things: the atmosphere, the fear, and the package.
Usually, these monster-infested areas for delivery are a bit calm at first, especially when you're just trying to find your way into the delivery area. You'll mostly be discovering rooms, corridors, some locked doors and some open ones, and a bit of trickery set up by the monsters.
Be careful, though, just because it's calm doesn't mean it's not dangerous - there are traps! From the humble bear trap to the flame-spitting ceiling trap, a myriad of trap variations await you, Courier! Besides that, you'll have to worry about a few things - your health, your arm strength (yes, packages drain arm strength), and your stamina. You know what they say, when these things are accounted for, it doesn't look too good for you.
Of course, not everything is as bad as they look. There will be stuff in rooms and corridors that are supposed to be a treat for humans! Cacti, Fruit Boxes, Explosive Crates, Lottery Vendos, and many more! These things will help you along the way, besides providing a meaningful way to track where you're going.
The Drop Off
After many doors and hallways, you'll eventually open the one you've been looking for - the drop-off area. You'll know you've found it when you see the Shop Outlet, a common sight near the delivery station.
Now - the Delivery Station. It's as simple as it appears, it's a place where you'll drop off the package! Simply place the package on its "mouth", and let it do the work! You'll know once it's done when it spits out the Griefcase.
What is the Griefcase? Simply put, it's what you need to retrieve in order for you to get paid as a Courier! Now, while it doesn't weigh anything (doesn't drain arm strength), it's more fragile than packages. The meter you see on it tells it all - if it reaches max, it will EXPLOOOOODE!
The Escape
I mentioned that the place was calm at first during package delivery, but now it's time for the most exciting part: the Escape!
The monsters have found out about you. That Delivery Station sure is loud.
We can't say for sure which type of monster you'll see. They mostly thrive in dark places, which is basically everywhere. For one, you might find doppelgangers (you were alone, right?), slugs, larger slugs, even larger slugs, spider-dog hybrids, and so much more - each equipped with their own unique "monstrosity". Don't worry, we'll dabble on this the next time we see each other.
Now, of course, since this is your very first delivery, and you're doing it alone. We're keeping our expectations appropriately low. That's exactly why you have 99 lives: plenty of opportunities to try again.
As for what happens after you successfully bring the Griefcase back to the Mission Control Room... well, that's for you to experience firsthand. We did promise you "Your First Delivery" guide, not "Your First Successful Delivery" guide.
Aaaand you're back in the lobby. Yes, you tried, but you're going to try again - around 98 more times. So, let's not forget what you experienced. Remember - 98 lives mean 98 lessons to be learned, just don't let it drop down to 0. Let's go up to the Mission Control Room again, shall we?
And that's it for the second chapter of the Courier Handbook! We'll come back with the third chapter to talk about the tools of the trade! Bye again, for now!
Don't miss this opportunity, Human!
