Hobby props & room customization! v6.3

Gaugepunk Games

This update is all about making the game feel more like a model railway. It adds lots of new props for things like hobby tools (wire cutters, soldering iron, etc), lots of electronic circuitry props (resistors, a breadboard, etc), new wire features and a complete redesign of how you can customize the actual room that you map is placed in.

New props

You can access all of these new props in the "Room -> Hobby props" drawer.

I would love to give a huge thank you to SmokeStream who built the majority of these props (everything except for the circuitry props). They have a huge number of other amazing prop mods on the Steam Workshop which I highly recommend having a look at!

Props like the soldering iron and airbrush even have snap points so that they can be easily attached to their holding stands, and the lamp even has a switch on the top to turn the map on and off!

Please keep in mind that these props are just for decoration, they don't have any gameplay function and just behave like normal placeable props in your map.

Grid sheets

These grids are accurate to real-world measurements and are 40cm x 30cm:

Circuit locomotive

This strange little train is actually something that has been in the game for years, but it was an unlockable easter egg!

But since it fit the theme of this update so well, I decided to include it alongside the other props, rather than locking it behind an easter egg unlock.

This locomotive is designed to look like a model train with its plastic chassis removed, with the motors and circuits visible:

Customize room walls

This update also adds a completely redesigned room customization system. The old system only had simple sky gradients and solid color, but now there are several room styles you can choose like wooden planks, tiles and more. You can also change the colors of each element:

You can access these new options on the wall next to the pause menu, under "Wall display options".

I've also cleaned up this menu a lot so that settings are better categorized into their own menus (e.g. a specific menu for planes, and putting bulk editing buttons under their own menu).

There is also now a "help" button which directs you to the in-game tutorials.

Inverted wires

Another smaller feature is that you can now make wires flip upside-down (both prop wires for powerlines and electrical wires for circuitry). This is very useful when you want to use wires for other things, like using a prop wire to mimick and electrical wire for decoration, where you want it to arch upwards instead of downwards.

To change this, simply set the "Slack" value in the wire tool options to use negative values.

E.g. slack = 3 (wire goes upwards), slack = -3 (wire goes downwards).

This is great for making decoration wires, like in this awesome screenshot by SmokeStream.

Other fixes and features

This update also includes:

  • Fixed the map 3D export setting for "simple track" which previously was not working correctly.
  • Added a new option for 3D map exporting to just export the terrain. You can access these settings in the "Modding -> Terrain" drawer, the opening the options menu
  • The levers on turntables are now fully interactable when outside of view distance (which is useful for electronic circuits that control turntables automatically).
  • Fixed bug where the preview mod display would not be visible when opening the modding menu from the 2D menu view.
  • Fixed bug where the tunnels tutorial didn't set the drawer correctly.
  • Moved several drawers around in the "Room" category.
  • Changed the default style of the old non-dynamic tables to the wooden baseboard style. This is to make more clear that they are older tables and should not be used for terrain, but they are still good for creating wooden baseboards.
  • Fixed bug where the edit tool was only enabling editing on props within the current radius, not adding them to the list of props already editable like it should have.
  • Fixed bug where some room props (like the portable menus and text label signs) were not able to be painted correctly.

And that's everything for this update!

As you've probably noticed, I absolutely love the aesthetic of model railways, especially circuitry. So this update is a proper favorite of mine. I love being able to make details in layouts that look like a real world model railway.

I also have plans for an upcoming map making competition centered around this theme!
