Load the passengers and luggage, take off, keep the plane in the air and somehow land safely.

And preferably deliver as many passengers and as much cargo as possible, with the plane still in one piece.

The passengers are not going to sit quietly either. They’ll need food, water, bathroom breaks and your attention. Ignore them for too long and things can go wrong very quickly.

During the flight, you may also have to deal with:

• storms and lightning • flocks of birds • low fuel • mid-air refueling • turbulence • oncoming aircraft

You’ll need to keep an eye on altitude, landing gear, engines and luggage, and sometimes literally climb out onto the wing to repair the plane.
