v0.321 Better chords, timpani and steel drum rolls, heuristics changes

Restless Games

Chord changes

When you land a note cleanly, it keeps ringing for as long as the song wrote it, instead of cutting off the moment you let go. Chord tones do the same. A piano chord can hold the long notes while the chart still shows the short, playable length - the shortest note in the stack - so you are not stuck holding a tail that was only there for the sound.

Let go early and it still cuts. In an online session, everyone hears that same ring.

Rolls

Long notes on timpani and steel drums roll and swell, instead of one hit that dies out. Shorter notes still strike once.

Songs That Wouldn't Open

Some MIDI files used to fail to load, including ones exported with extra-long timing values (this shows up from tools like FL Studio). They were skipped, so they would not play or show a length.

Those files read now. If a song was stuck as a failed import, it gets another try and should show up and play.

Clearer Charts

A few charting changes so the buttons better match what you hear:

The highest note in a key can be played two ways: the top face button, or D-pad Down with the octave button held. Charts used to pick between them one note at a time, which could have you lift the octave button for a single note and press it right back down. Now the chart looks at the whole run of notes between rests and picks whichever way means the fewest octave-button changes. If the octave button is already held for the notes around it, that note stays on Down with octave. Otherwise it's the top face button. When either way works, the chart keeps the same button it already used for that note in the run, so one pitch doesn't hop between two buttons mid-line.

Hitting the same button twice no longer hides an octave jump. If the pitch jumps an octave, the chart shows the octave button, and the window moves when the button actually changes.

Charts you already know may ask for a different button in those spots. Either button still counts as a hit; only what's drawn on the lane changed.

Fixes

Online Jam Sessions should be more reliable with larger lobbies Fixed the multiple instrument warning from showing placeholder instruments. In a future update this will be a stowable panel Some font changes, this should help with missing characters in non-english song titles and names Battle mode was accidentally included in the shipping build. This was still largely untested. It has been disabled until the proper tuning pass can be done
