DarkStone Restoration

Update 6 is here: make Darkstone your own

Paul Cuisset

This is a big one. Update 6 adds two things I have wanted in the game for a long time, and clears out a whole pile of issues you have reported along the way. Thank you for playing, and for the feedback that keeps shaping this restoration.

An interface that is finally yours

The HUD is no longer set in stone. Open the layout editor and move, resize or hide any part of it until it sits exactly where you want, with mouse or gamepad. Prefer a cleaner look? Switch to the new Modern preset in a click. And you can go further and reskin the whole interface with themes. Three ship with the game (Modern, Classic and ClassicModular), right down to the map. If you enjoy making things, the theme editor comes with the game and you can share your creations on the Steam Workshop, the same way you already share companion scripts.

New places to dive, new bosses to hunt

Scattered across the world you will now find loot lairs: procedural dungeons built for one thing, the hunt for gear. They are switched on by default when you start a new character (your current saves are left exactly as they are). Some of these lairs are guarded by an elite named boss and its minions. These fights hit harder, the boss claws back health as you go, and finishing one off is meant to feel like a moment. Clear a lair, and it stays cleared, no more bosses rising from the dead when you come back.

On sale now

And there is no better moment to jump in: DarkStone Restoration is -20% for the Steam Autumn Sale, October 1 to 8. As always, Darkstone Restoration is a work in progress and it grows with your reports. If you run into something, come tell me on Discord. And if you are enjoying the game, a wishlist and a word to a friend go a long way.

Full changelog

HUD and UI themes

  • Every part of the HUD (bottom bar, spell bar, minimap, character panels, buff and debuff indicators, message banner) is a movable, resizable widget. Edit it with Ctrl+I or from Options, mouse or gamepad, with a Modern preset. Your layout is saved.
  • The interface can be reskinned with themes (Modern, Classic, ClassicModular), including the map background. The dsUiAtlas editor ships with the game and themes can be shared on the Steam Workshop.

Farming dungeons and elite bosses

  • New procedural loot lairs across the world, via the Extended gameplay option (on by default for new games, existing saves untouched).
  • Some lairs hold an elite named boss with minions. It recovers health during the fight, its death is a proper set piece, and it no longer comes back to life when you revisit a lair you cleared.

Combat and monsters

  • A CRITICAL! word floats above a monster on your critical hit, and a RESIST word when it resists a spell.
  • A Magic Missile weapon proc now fires a crown of at least four missiles, scaling with your mastery of the spell.
  • Fixed cases of getting stuck against big footprint monsters (auto-combat locking onto a corpse, a monster sealing a doorway, melee reach disagreeing through a wall).
  • Your character no longer clips into walls when hugging them with mouse movement.
  • The training camp troll dies on its gate again, and reflected projectiles at higher difficulty no longer strike your own allies.
  • Cleave on heavy two-handed weapons: geometry and chaining repaired, and a critical hit no longer inflates it.

Companion

  • New companion scripting functions let you program smarter positioning, such as leash-aware targeting, ranged awareness and reacting to enemies that just hit it.

Stability

  • Fixed several crashes: a shot landing on a freed monster slot, the companion engaging a target that had vanished, and changing level with an attack still in progress.

Items and shops

  • Identify All no longer shows the wrong item in the reveal boxes.
  • Enchanted and high-level shop items leave the shelf when bought, instead of restocking forever.
  • Fountains and shops reach your companion from farther away.

Quality of life

  • The loot filter now has a checkbox in Options as well as Ctrl+L, and your choice sticks.
  • The languages menu shows each language written in its own script.
  • Gamepad: a new RB+X forced pickup grabs the nearest item directly.
  • Fixed a case where closing the game during the intro could leave it running with no window.

Localisation and rendering

  • New translation pass for Italian, German, Spanish and Swedish.
  • The fog of war fades per pixel instead of per vertex, for a smoother edge.
  • Fixed floating text whose baseline drifted by a pixel between font atlas rows.
  • Roof fades are guided by the model data and propagate to the whole roof.
