Domino VR 0.9.1: Thank you Reddit!
A big thank you to the playtesters from the Steam Frame Reddit who tried the new version over the past few days! You sent notes, videos and bug reports, and nearly everything below comes straight from that feedback.
Building
- Added row painting, now the default way to build: hold the place button and sweep, and a row of dominoes follows your hand. A tap still places one domino. The face button on your empty build hand switches to single dominoes.
- While aiming a domino, the stick turns it or resizes it, never both at once. The size pauses at normal size with a small tick, and the controller screen shows the size when it isn't normal.
- Held dominoes can now be turned: hold the trigger and use the stick, click the stick to stand it upright.
- Stamps stay in the air where you let go of them; the curve stamp bends with the stick (arrow keys on PC).
- Pendulum and bell: the swinging part stays locked to its frame while you carry it.
- Added sandbox build mode (world page): when used, props float in place while you build. Start and Reset on the wrist menu then control whether props float or not.
Levels
- Levels now unlock by page: the three tutorials first, then the whole first page, and the second page after eight completed levels.
- Retrying a level no longer slowly changes your build: a solution that worked keeps working after many retries.
- Reset brings back your build as you placed it: dominoes you knocked over by accident while building stand back up. Start runs the build as it is.
- While a level runs, the controller screen and the wrist menu say why you can't build ("Reset to build").
Controls and comfort
- Added toggle grip - press grip once to hold, again to let go, off by default.
- Added spacing snap - single dominoes line up with the last row, off by default.
- The controller screen shows tool icons now (or the domino colour).
- Button names on the Steam Frame controllers match the real buttons.
- Smooth turning has a speed setting: Slow, Medium (new default, faster than before) or Fast.
- Pointer lasers follow the aim direction, like SteamVR.
- Less buzzing: teleport aiming no longer vibrates, and hovering vibrates at most a few times per second, following the haptics setting.
- Hints: one at a time per hand, on rounded panels that are easier to read. New tips on how to start a chain and how to paint a row.
- A pinned tool palette stays where you put it in the room, and a grab bar above it moves it.
- Info cards on picked-up props stay up while you're reading them.
- Added a controls tour for the sandbox: it walks through painting rows, single dominoes, turning and resizing, turning what you hold, undo, tools and stamps. It is offered the first time, and the Tutorial tile in the menu replays it.
Menus
- The main menu starts with two choices: Puzzles (the campaign, community levels and the level editor) and Sandbox (the worlds, your saved worlds, community worlds and playing together).
Worlds
- Forest Island: solid ground everywhere, you can teleport onto the meadow and hills, and falling off the edge puts you back on the island. The game menu follows you.
Fixes
- Old button labels no longer flash up on the controllers while a level loads.
- Grabbing in spots with a lot of dominos no longer misses the domino right at your hand, and a thin outline shows what your empty hand would pick up.
Thanks again for playing, and see you in the next update!
