Holy Shroom!

Holy Shroom! is moddable now. Here is what you can change.

GameWood

You can mod the forest now

Holy Shroom! supports mods. Not reskins: the actual numbers and rules the game runs on.

What a mod can change

  • Mushrooms. What a species is worth, how much room it takes in your basket, what it does to you when you eat it. Add new species, or rewrite ours.
  • The shop. New items, different prices.
  • Contracts. Your own jobs, next to the ones the director already hands out.
  • Creatures. A profile, its own behaviour, and it lives in the woods like everything else.
  • Whole new maps. Build your own level and it shows up in the base next to our forests, with its own name and preview.
  • Characters, terrains and emotes.
  • Mechanics. Your own gameplay, bolted onto the player without touching our code.

A mod declares what it changes and the game stacks it on top of its own tables. A row with a new name adds something. A row with a name the game already uses replaces ours. That is the whole idea, and it is why a five line mod can double every mushroom price in the game.

Where to start

  • The Mod SDK is at adrenalinegames.pl/holyshroom-modding. Four megabytes, plugins already compiled.
  • The guide is on the same page, written for someone who has never opened Unreal.
  • There is an example mod in the SDK. Open it, break it, see what happens.

Finished mods go on the Steam Workshop. Subscribe and the game picks them up on its own.

Honest about where this is

I build this game on my own and the modding system is new. It works, and I tested it in the packaged game rather than only in my editor, which is where this kind of thing usually falls apart. But you will find edges I did not.

So if you make something and it does not load, or it loads and does nothing, tell me on the discussion board. Paste what the MODS screen says about your mod. That screen reports exactly what the game accepted from it, and that is usually enough for me to see the problem.

What helps me most

  • A mod that is not picked up at all, with its folder layout.
  • A mod that loads but whose changes do not show up in the game.
  • Anything in the guide that is wrong, missing a step, or assumes knowledge you do not have.
  • Things you wanted to change and could not. That list decides what I open up next.

I read every thread myself and I answer. If you build something good, I want to see it.
