Dev Update: Steam Deck Verified, and The Future of Jump Space
Hello, Atirans!
It’s time to once again catch up on what’s going on.
Like the title mentions, we are currently planning for what 1.0 of Jump Space will look like - in addition to what’s coming in the December update of course.
Anniversary Update:
We’re very happy with the reception of the latest update and the Free Weekend.
Long-time players keep confirming that the game is heading in a good direction, and we’ve ironed out big issues that made old or new players step away from the game. Just looking at Steam reviews alone, the percentage score is looking better than ever.
There’s still a ton to do and fair critique to absorb, but the validation on what’s going well was great to hear.
Performance and the rare hitching will continuously be improved, as we keep reworking game systems to be faster and lighter under the hood. We started the performance issues feedback thread in Steam Discussions for this reason, to gather testimonials of weird problems so we can fix them.
Fully Verified on Steam Deck:
We've got the checkmark!
Jump Space on Steam Deck now plays better than ever, with icons and on-screen keyboards - everything you'd expect from full certification.
Halloween Event is Back:
We are getting close to the spooky weekend again, so the same Halloween event from last year will return together with the cosmetic helmet.
It will be live between October 20th - November 10th.
The Future:
There’s a lot to talk about here, and of course everyone is curious about what’s coming next.
We have our Roadmap full of promised features (always visible on our store page) to add, the next content update coming in December, and new ideas popping into our heads constantly.
Right now we are roughly planning what we can achieve in 2027, and in what order is best - based on your feedback.
But if you came here for some concrete specifics of what’s coming next, here you go.
We’re aiming to hopefully add this and more for December’s update:
- Voice chat
- New sectors/maps
- New objectives within sectors
- Randomized side-objectives and Points of Interest areas
- Corvette mini-boss rework
- New ground enemy types
- New vendor(s), new special currency
- Make loot more specific and less random
- Reduce Ingot types from 5 to 3 (and convert the ones we are removing so your currency progress isn't affected)
- Focus on fixing “stuttering” and low FPS for some players
- More gameplay puzzles
We always think “can we add just ooone more thing?” with each update, but some things will have to wait until next year.
We did want to share a little about how we make these decisions as a studio.
Internally, we have our core concepts of what we want Jump Space as an experience to be. Basically - anything we add or change should align with one of these concepts:
- Ship & Crew at the Core - All core mechanics must reinforce the ship as a home and the crew experience as central to the game.
- Creative & Meaningful Choices - Present meaningful choices shaped by risk, reward, and consequence.
- Suspense, Adaptation, and Awe - Invite exploration and create surprise, requiring players to adapt to a new situation.
- Progression has Impact -Long-term progression must meaningfully change the player’s impact and options when playing the game.
These can sound a little vague, so here are some examples.
As many have shared in feedback, the game can feel repetitive and samey after a certain point. Same maps with same objectives become predictable etc.
So adding new content and systems to further randomize every mission will improve the Suspense and Awe concept.
And if the Ship is meant to be at the Core, we definitely need more ship customization than what is currently possible.
You get the idea.
We have a whole wall of things we want to add - too much to go through here - but just knowing the core concepts lets you get an idea of what identity Jump Space will continue to have as we evolve the game.
About 1.0 Release:
When will it happen?
Are we doing a PS5 port, or cross-play?
While it's still too early to have specifics decided, all of these things will happen at some point.
For now, you can assume that Early Access and these content updates will continue for all of 2027, with PS5 and cross-play coming once we hit 1.0.
This isn’t a set-in-stone timeline, and things will likely change next year (in a good way!) .
So this is what we can say until we announce specifics during 2027.
That’s about it for now!
We will return in December with the next content update. So if you catch up on news only through these posts - talk to you then!
If you want to listen to us talk about these topics and other Q&A stuff from the recent stream, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/live/Wxt8NOMsK4Y?si=4_mIMH1GvY10Q-Se
After December, we will refresh the Roadmap we have on the store page to visually show more of what’s coming in 2027.
Thank you as always for helping us make Jump Space the best game it can be.
Fly safe, and Happy Halloween
