Never Be Alone — The Free Demo Is Finally Here!
Never Be Alone — The Free Demo Is Finally Here!
Survivors, the day is finally here! After almost 4 years of development, and 10 and a half months since I first started showing Never Be Alone to the world, we've finally reached one of the biggest milestones for our small team. The free demo of Never Be Alone is now available on Steam! It's honestly a little hard to believe we're here. What started as a passion project that I worked on during evenings and weekends alongside my full-time job has now reached a point where so many people are excited to get their hands on it. And that's all thanks to you. Before you jump in, I want to share a few important things about the demo, what you can expect, and what happens between now and Early Access.
What Can You Expect From the Demo?
The demo is your first real opportunity to experience what Never Be Alone has to offer. You've probably already read about most of the game's features on our Steam page, so I won't bore you by repeating everything here. Instead, here are a few things worth knowing before you start playing.
Gameplay Settings & Character Customization
Before starting your adventure, I highly recommend taking a moment to customize your character and adjust your gameplay settings. You can find these settings under: Settings > Gameplay Here, you'll find several options to customize your survival experience, including toggles for different gameplay features and sliders that let you adjust various survival systems. Whether you want a more relaxed experience or something more challenging, take a look at these settings before jumping in!
Controller Support
Controller support is mostly implemented, although there are still a few issues we're working through. One known issue involves Unreal Engine occasionally registering the controller's bottom face button as a mouse input, which can cause problems with menu navigation. Please pay attention to the button icons displayed in the UI when navigating menus, as these should help you use the correct inputs. Controller support will continue to be improved as development progresses.
Known Third-Person Camera Issue
There's currently one rare issue that may affect some players when launching the game for the first time. Your third-person camera might appear inside your character. If this happens, go into Settings and adjust the FOV slider by just 0.1. This should immediately correct the camera. I've been working on fixing this, but because I haven't been able to reproduce the issue consistently, it's been difficult to verify whether the underlying fix works for everyone. Hopefully, very few of you will encounter it!
Bug Reports & Feedback
With a game of this size, there will inevitably be bugs and issues that we haven't discovered yet. If you run into anything, I'd really appreciate you taking the time to report it. You can report bugs through our Discord or the dedicated bug-reporting discussion here on Steam. Join the Never Be Alone Discord Please note: The demo is not planned to receive regular updates unless a game-breaking issue is discovered. That doesn't mean your reports are being ignored. Quite the opposite! Every reported issue will be noted and reviewed so we can prioritize fixes as development continues. We'd also love to hear your honest feedback about the demo. Both positive and negative feedback will be incredibly helpful when planning the future roadmap.
What Happens Between the Demo and Early Access?
I want to be completely transparent about this, because I think you deserve to know what we're working toward. As someone who has been developing most of this project on my own, I have to be very careful about where I spend my time. With the demo now available, my main focus will shift toward finishing the remaining story missions, side quests, dialogue, and the second island. There's still a huge amount of work ahead. One of the things I'm particularly passionate about is the story. Throughout different missions, players will be able to make choices that can lead to three different outcomes, affecting what happens next and which dialogue you'll experience. This also means not everyone will have the exact same experience. It's something I've put a tremendous amount of time into, and while it makes development considerably more complicated, I truly believe it'll be worth it. The coming months are going to be extremely busy, with plenty of long days and late nights. Once the remaining missions, dialogue, and map work are completed, I'll be able to shift more attention back toward bug fixes, existing systems, improvements, and general polish before Early Access. My goal is simple: to deliver the best possible version of Never Be Alone that I can.
Localization & Translations
The demo includes support for 30 languages, and a lot of work has gone into getting everything translated in time. However, mistakes can happen. If you notice any major translation issues in your native language, please let me know! And if you'd like to help improve translations, you're always welcome to join our Discord community. Any help making the game more accessible and enjoyable for players around the world is greatly appreciated.
How Long Will the Demo Be Available?
The plan is to keep the demo available until the game's release! There's no need to rush through everything. You should be able to spend many hours exploring, surviving, experimenting with the different systems, and hopefully having a great time. Your feedback during this period will be incredibly valuable in helping us identify what needs more attention before Early Access.
One Last Thank You
I genuinely don't think I can put into words how much this moment means to me. For almost four years, I've poured an enormous amount of my life into this project. There have been countless late nights, frustrating bugs, difficult decisions, and moments where things simply didn't want to work. But there have also been some incredible moments. Seeing the community grow, reading your messages, watching your excitement, and realizing that something I've spent so much time creating is something other people genuinely want to play has been an unbelievable experience. To everyone who has followed the project since January, joined our Discord, wishlisted the game, shared our videos, or simply sent a kind message: Thank you so much. And a special thank you to our playtesters, who have spent so much time helping us identify issues and improve the game leading up to this moment. I know the demo won't be perfect. There are still things I want to improve, systems I want to expand, and plenty more content planned. But more than anything, I hope you enjoy playing Never Be Alone and can see the potential of what we're building. This is a huge milestone, but it's also just the beginning. Thank you for being part of this journey. Now go survive! — Beast Studios Join our community on Discord
