New RPG-Style Zombie Progression System
Hey survivors!
I’ve been working on a new progression system to make exploring different parts of Not Quite Dead feel more rewarding and more dangerous.
Zombies will now have different Levels, Names, Health, Damage and Loot rewards depending on the region you are exploring.
Early-game areas will contain weaker enemies around Level 1–5, while harder regions will gradually increase in difficulty. The desert will become one of the most dangerous areas, with standard zombies reaching approximately Level 30–40.
At the highest levels, zombies can reach around 6,000 HP, making late-game combat much more demanding.
Why this change?
The main goal is to make your equipment progression matter much more.
Higher-level enemies will give more purpose to:
- Weapon upgrades
- Weapon mods
- Stronger weapons
- Upcoming higher-tier protective armor
- Better preparation before entering dangerous regions
Instead of every area having roughly the same difficulty, travelling across the island will now feel more like real progression.
You may be comfortable fighting zombies in the northern starting areas, but walking into a late-game region under-equipped should feel dangerous.
Better enemies, better rewards
Higher-level zombies will also provide increased loot rewards.
The stronger the zombie, the more worthwhile the fight becomes.
The current progression is designed so that early zombies keep their normal rewards, while higher-level enemies can provide significantly more common materials, ammunition and cash.
Rare rewards and special currencies will remain more controlled so the economy does not get completely destroyed.
Regional difficulty
The current structure is roughly:
Starting Region Level 1–5
Intermediate Region Level 10–15
Dangerous Region Level 15–20
Desert / Late Game Level 30–40
Each region will also have different zombie names and variants to make areas feel more distinct.
This is part of a larger effort to make Not Quite Dead feel more like a survival RPG, where exploring harder areas actually requires better gear and gives better rewards.
There is still balancing and testing to do, but the foundation is now working.
Thanks again for all the feedback and support!
