Nuclear Nightmare v8.0 Update

Hey everyone,

v8.0 is the start of a series of 8.x updates that will gradually bring Nuclear Nightmare toward its full 1.0 release and out of Early Access. I want to get these changes into your hands as they’re ready, get feedback, and keep improving the game along the way.

The biggest focus this time has been the AI. I’ve spent a lot of time making the monsters less predictable and giving them more distinct ways of hunting you. There’s also a map remaster, a UI rework, performance improvements, and plenty of smaller changes.

The monsters have had a lot of work.

  • Watcher: Can approach from your sides or behind, investigate sounds from different angles, and reposition before committing to an attack.
  • Husk: Can move ahead of your path to set up an interception. It approaches sounds more directly, then searches the surrounding area.
  • Psycho: Takes a more patient approach, moving slowly into sheltered positions and waiting longer before rushing you.
  • Meek: Can move into covered ambush positions while unobserved and pause to listen during investigations. Its gaze detection now checks what players can actually see, so looking toward it through a wall or having it off-screen won’t keep it frozen.
  • Stalker: Can approach slowly from behind, lurk in cover, and take wider routes around sounds before closing in.
  • Enemies can also stop in concealed positions during patrols, creating more opportunities to walk into an ambush.

I’ve also changed how they react once an encounter starts.

  • Quiet footsteps, running, and gunfire now produce different reactions. Quiet movement encourages cautious investigation, while louder sounds bring a more urgent response.
  • Sound investigations focus on where the noise was heard, giving you time to move before an enemy arrives.
  • Taking damage can make an enemy reposition and approach from another angle.
  • Badly injured enemies are more likely to seek cover before returning to the hunt.
  • Cover selection considers how well a position actually protects the enemy, along with the route needed to reach it. Enemies reassess positions when they become exposed or take further hits.
  • Retreats and hiding have limits, keeping enemies from spending the whole encounter backing away.
  • Improved movement, acceleration, and turning so enemies change direction with more purpose.
  • Flares now lead to a brief investigation before enemies resume hunting. Close player sightings and damage can interrupt the distraction.
  • Improved pursuit of players on snowmobiles, including attempts to intercept a rider’s visible escape route.
  • Expanded patrol routes through interiors and points of interest across Low Island, Forest, Crevasse, and Tower Island.
  • Enemies apply more sustained pressure during evacuation, spending less time seeking cover when players are about to escape.

Generators should create more varied encounters.

  • Reworked individual interest and response timing, reducing the tendency for every nearby enemy to rush the generator together.
  • An enemy can commit to a generator attempt while others continue hunting. Interest builds the longer it stays powered.
  • Quiet footsteps won’t constantly interrupt a committed approach, although more urgent threats can still draw an enemy away.
  • Enemies must physically reach the generator before breaking it.
  • Blocked approaches are abandoned, with longer waits before retrying after repeated failures.

The Mimic should be harder to pick out—and fairer to escape once revealed.

  • Disguised Mimics vary their walking and running pace and take less rigid routes.
  • Added glances toward nearby players and the surroundings, with smoother turns while moving or standing still.
  • Revealed Mimics hunt using sightings and sounds. Breaking line of sight and staying quiet can help you lose them.
  • Added reactions to gunfire and injuries, including brief retreats, flanking, and seeking cover.
  • Improved disguise cycling after unsuccessful hunts, allowing the Mimic to disengage and copy another living player when one is available.
  • Improved navigation and attack checks to prevent unreachable pursuits and grabs through walls or from too far away.

Apex Predator and Slug Queen have been brought up to date too.

  • Updated both bosses with the newer patrol routing, sound investigations, and flare behavior.
  • Apex remains blind, pursuing sounds and investigating where they were heard.
  • Improved attack recovery, including cases where bosses could stop moving after killing a player.
  • Added a cooldown and limit to Slug Queen’s living leech summons.
  • Passive world leeches now support dormancy, retaining their existing idle, flee, and contact-attack behavior.

Enemy spawning and night progression have been reworked.

  • Enemies arrive individually at varied times instead of appearing together as a wave.
  • Stronger ground, collision, and navigation checks help prevent enemies spawning in unsuitable or unreachable locations.
  • Improved visibility checks reduce enemies appearing in view, including when players are watching from rooftops.
  • Reworked distant enemy sleeping, waking, and reuse to reduce overhead while preserving their health and variants.
  • Adjusted nearby population checks so one hidden enemy doesn’t prevent further arrivals.
  • Retuned spawning across every difficulty, with pressure increasing as the nights go on.
  • The opening daytime remains protected, including when daytime spawning is enabled. That setting takes effect after the first night.
  • Improved worm emergence checks around buildings and obstructions, along with fixes for buried worms failing to animate correctly.

We’ve given the maps another pass.

  • Added more accumulated snow to buildings, roofs, structures, and props.
  • Remastered terrain textures, including snow, rocks, and trails, and improved several lower-resolution textures.
  • Refined materials, ambient occlusion, lighting, and color grading.
  • Reduced film grain and sharpening, with an updated color grade.
  • Added foliage and ground detail, adjusted Forest brightness, and added scattered ice fragments and snowdrifts to the arctic environment.
  • Updated several interior areas.
  • Fixed thin terrain seams that could appear in packaged builds.
  • Added volumetric clouds and clearer skies to the tutorial level.

The interface has been reworked throughout the game.

  • Updated menus, settings, lobbies, server browsing, HUD elements, objectives, tutorials, perks, and endgame screens.
  • Polished transitions, navigation, spacing, and hover, press, and focus feedback.
  • Redesigned the map and journal as a worn field binder.
  • Hold the left mouse button to pan the map; scrolling zooms toward your cursor.
  • Improved initial map positioning and added custom arrow and grab cursors.
  • Interaction prompts display your current Interact binding and update when it changes.
  • Improved first-time language selection and emote-menu layouts.
  • Fixed tutorial and soda popups allowing background input, losing focus, or leaving players stuck.

A few other gameplay changes and fixes:

  • Reworked walking and running head bob, with gentler sustained running motion.
  • Smoothed movement up and down steps, keeping the camera, arms, and hands moving together.
  • Snowmobile and Snowcat fuel consumption is now independent of frame rate.
  • Reworked item spawning to prepare nearby locations earlier, including when players are travelling in vehicles.
  • Retuned item weight, damping, and physics to reduce jitter and improve how dropped items settle in multiplayer.
  • Dropping an item now gives it a controlled forward toss with a small upward lift.
  • Broken doors fall, collide, and settle more consistently. Monster bash force varies by species, with synchronized break sounds and particles.
  • Reworked elevator movement in multiplayer and fixed false fall damage while riding or jumping inside the cabin.
  • Fixed inconsistent iceberg sliding for clients.
  • Fixed radio and computer occupancy remaining locked after another player exits.
  • Computers and radios close with Escape, S, or your current Interact key. Mouse clicks and scrolling no longer accidentally close them.
  • Fixed search music retaining stale enemies or continuing after it should end.
  • Attack music now follows threats to the local player, with better visibility checks and cleanup when those threats clear.

I’ve continued working on performance alongside these changes.

  • Expanded shader and pipeline caching to reduce compilation stutters.
  • Added a “Preparing graphics…” stage during loading.
  • Improved texture streaming and spread texture uploads across frames to reduce sudden stalls.
  • Optimized Forest foliage, ground clutter, water rendering, and repeated map geometry.
  • Fixed an animation-processing issue that could cause large hitches.
  • Raised the frame-rate limit to 200 FPS.

We’re also working on animation and gun model reworks as part of the move toward 1.0. There’s more to come through the 8.x updates.

I’m especially interested in hearing how the monsters feel after this update and how the pressure builds over multiple nights. If you leave feedback, including your difficulty and enemy frequency settings will help me tune it. Happy Halloween & 2 year Anniversary of Nuclear Nightmare!
