Early Access Update 0.8 — The Halloween Toy Shop
A quick note before the update: i'm working on a new game, Video Game Store: Tidy Up (Demo will be soon!).
A fifth shop, in pumpkin light and violet shadow: a round toy shop three storeys tall under a dome, with its own range, its own perks and its own costumes.
The haunted toy shop
A new venue you pick like any other, and it replaces the shop in every mode — Exact, Mass, Free and Endless — solo or in co-op.
Galleries run round an atrium under a dome open to the night sky. A giant pumpkin in a witch's hat sits on a stage of presents in the middle, ghosts hang over the atrium, autumn trees stand on the shop floor, and two grand staircases climb to the upper storeys through lit pumpkin gateways.
On the top storey, under the back window, a castle stands on its rock behind a moat, with a drawbridge, a graveyard, dead trees and a crescent moon with bats circling it.
Six haunted machines
The display plots have their own machines, and they move from the moment you walk in: the ghost train, the witch's cauldron, the moon swing, the pumpkin patch, the fortune table and the fair stage. Finish a plot and its ride starts turning.
The shop plays its own music: three Halloween tracks instead of the usual playlist.
185 new toys
37 shelves of them, each in its own colourways, and nothing recoloured from the other shops.
Pumpkins, ghosts, black cats, classic monsters, witches, zombies, skeletons, creepy plush, gothic dolls, bats, night birds, spooky pets, spiders, reapers, little monsters, dragons, slime, monster ducks, witch kit, cauldrons and potions, lanterns and candles, graveyard, haunted houses, haunted garden, treats, candy, monster food, surprise boxes, crystal balls, haunted things, haunted music, spooky games, fright fair, balloons, haunted rides, the ghost train and the abyss.
Perks of its own
The candy prize machine sells the haunted shop's ladder, one rung at a time with the strongest last:
- Pumpkin eye — the loose toys of the family you carry rise off the floor and hang from the ceiling on cobweb strands.
- Blood trail — pick up a toy and bloody footprints lead to its shelf, stairs and all, to a slot full of blood.
- Interdimensional portal — the toy enters a portal in front of you and comes out of one beside its slot. Three grades, reaching further each time.
- Zombie helpers — your helpers are zombies, shuffling, groaning and shelving toys.
- Bats — one key sends everything you carry home at once, each toy under its own red-eyed bat.
- Free flight — bat wings and a wheel of bats: jump and they take you.
- Dracula's cape — the cape closes over your view and opens again at the shelf that wants the toy you hold.
- Errand ghosts — the legendary. Ghosts twirl up from the floor, fetch the loose toys of your family and bring them to you.
The sorter crate is a trick-or-treat chest here.
Dressed for Halloween
Everyone in the haunted shop is Dracula — tailcoat, red waistcoat, a medallion, fangs and a high-collared cape lined in your colour — the helpers are zombies and the toddler wears a skeleton costume.
Free mode has its own kit: a haunted gondola, a candy counter, a coffin, a witch's wardrobe, a pumpkin crate and a tiered display, plus pumpkin piles, tombstones, a cauldron, lanterns, a scarecrow, a cobweb arch and stickers. Endless has its own night palette, and the cinematics film their shots here too.
43 new achievements
One for every set in the range, and completion tiers for Exact and Mass.
Support from inside the game
- Support in the menu replaces "Generate report": report a problem and read the developer's answers without leaving the game.
- You can send your game state with a ticket, so we can see your store exactly as you left it.
Graphics card
- On a PC with two graphics cards, the game now notices when it has been started on the weaker one, tells you, and can have Windows start it on the stronger card from the next launch.
Saves
- If the game can't save because its storage is full, it now tells you on screen instead of failing silently.
- Once there is room again, the next save picks up everything you did while saving was failing.
- Your achievement progress now takes around a tenth of the storage it used to.
- Fixed Mass placement runs sometimes reloading on an earlier floor with the upper floors locked.
Co-op works exactly as it does in the other four shops: the host's shop, helpers, perks and costumes are all mirrored to guests. Saves are untouched, and each venue keeps its own; existing profiles are shrunk automatically the first time you launch. Multiplayer still requires everyone on the same version.
