Demo update: a new coastal fire, aircraft model changes, radio indicators

MonkeyCat Games

A third fire, on the coast

Montecito Front joins Ridge Complex and Flatiron Basin in the demo. It is an 8 km map against the ocean, 1,100 meters of relief from the beach to the ridge, with four settlements strung along the slope and a sundowner wind pushing 30 knots down the canyons at you. It is a four flame fire making it among the most difficult in the game.

The aircraft look like the aircraft

Every airframe in the fleet was redrawn against its real reference. The noses were too pointed and now end properly, the wings carry a narrower chord, the tails close up properly, and the engines are sized off the actual nacelles rather than eyeballed. The air tanker is now recognizably a BAe 146 and the very large tanker a DC-10. (I know the BAE didn't come into tanker service until 2010, but just go with it). Bug Fixes: Helis flying through things. Drop-line arrowheads follow the ground instead of disappearing into it, and aircraft now clear what is built on the terrain rather than only the terrain itself.

Radio call indicators

A broadcast pin marks whichever aircraft is on the net, beside its callsign on the map and on its roster row. Subtitles are in, off by default, switchable under the volume controls on the title screen. Radio traffic is written out at the bottom of the screen.

Smaller things

  • Right-click aborts a line you are drawing, instead of making you finish it.
  • The hint strip now tells you how to get it back after you've dismissed it, which on a controller was previously not possible at all.
  • Both menus end in QUIT. Escape always worked, but on a Steam Deck with no Escape mapped there was no visible way out.
  • The demo asks for a wishlist with a button.
  • Fixed the tutorial text showing for every mission rather than just the first.
