Early Access Patch 6 - Version 1.3.1
Heya Heroes in need of Redemption!
This monthly round of updates brings some massive gameplay updates, starting with a new playable hero, a gigantic new room (that is central to the lore and the story unfolding), a deep rework of the combat system (yes!), and a plethora of mid- and small-sized changes and improvements.
Among them: new graphics options with 3 CRT scanline presets, much shorter loading times, a new summoning minigame for Elowen, and more (see details below).
Also: enemies can now ride mounts!
Before we get into the detailed Patch Notes, we wanted to let you know what else we're cooking internally:
- Major audio system rework. We hired a top-class audio specialist who led the audio implementation on some massively popular games, and we are redesigning the game's audio middleware and SFX content.
This, among other things. will be released with the next update! But enough about the future; let's talk about what's dropping today:
Discover the Carillon Room
A secret entrance in the Ceremony leads to a new story room. Recover the Carillon relic and return it to the Beggar to begin uncovering his forgotten past. Finding the relic also unlocks the Carillon palettes. The melody is only the beginning.
Darian the Bard joins the Brotherhood!
There’s a new face around the campfire. Darian, our wandering Bard, joins the Brotherhood with his guitar (or is it a mandolin?), his special attacks, new portraits, voice lines, and a few songs worth learning. Darian is a Support character, similar to Elowen: try to use his songs in co-op mode!
- Support Song: complete the note sequence to temporarily boost Darian’s attack power and that of a nearby co-op partner. A wrong note or timeout drains his stamina.
- Dance: make enemies within 12 meters dance for 7 seconds, forcing guarding tanks to lower their defenses. Bosses remain unimpressed!
- Corruption: unleash sonic pulses that knock enemies away and smash breakable objects.
New tricks for your next run
- Enemy riders: Skeleton Guards and Royal Enforcers can now fight from mounts. Land a clean hit to knock them off and claim the saddle!
- Elowen’s summons: a shuffled timing bar lets you summon a book, poison fly, or crow, with the crow requiring the most precise timing. Hitting the red section or running out of time drains her stamina. The minions now have different HP and attack values (the harder to summon, the stronger on the battlefield!).
- Successful summons cost 60% of maximum stamina and last up to 45 seconds. Starting another attempt dismisses the current summon. Allied crows now fly within melee reach, and enemies retaliate against summoned allies.
- Boomerangs: defeat Ronhak to unlock them. Each pickup grants 5 ammunition, and throws can hit enemies both outbound and returning.
Combat with more punch
Your feedback has helped us revisit attack timing, enemy reactions, and the flow of combat. We’re excited for you to try these changes.
- Basic attacks can launch enemies into air juggles. Enemies also recoil from individual hits before resuming their pursuit.
- Guards press forward and parry from the front, taking an attack turn only when they strike. Improved enemy facing, positioning, and attack-turn cleanup.
- Retimed hero attacks and adjusted dash-attack and jump-attack hitboxes to better match their animations. Walking animations now follow movement speed.
- Reworked Branok’s grab throw visuals and contact points, and it finishes even when it empties his stamina. His special’s opening hits deliver stronger knockback.
- Branok’s and Valraven’s specials now damage in pulses and break objects (instead of only the first hit). Their corrupted abilities also interact more consistently with breakables.
- Improved controller vibration, chakram-catching animations, and bleed effects. Fixed unwanted sliding when hit during a dash attack.
- Thrown weapons aim relative to the active camera. Elemental bomb blast radii fit their visible clouds more closely, with damage values and status effects unchanged.
- Reworked and adjusted all attack frame timings, hitbox shapes, and durations; added input buffer, and a lot more “under-the-hood” improvements!
Corruption, camera, and readability
- Ouch-Less reduces the health lost when corruption ends. The base loss is 25% of current health, reduced by 5 percentage points per star: 20%, then 15%, and so on.
- Fixed corruption-meter draining during transformation, lingering visual effects after runs, and issues when leaving corrupted form.
- Added landing shadows beneath airborne heroes, improved camera tilt with zoom, and fixed manual zoom during camera transitions.
Exploration and rewards
- Bonus rooms are slightly more likely to appear and can no longer be the opening room. Thirsty Entrance, The Press, and Flooded now have standard room-selection weights.
- Second-biome gold pickups receive a 24% bonus. Pickup messages correctly include biome and Coin Purse bonuses.
- Brogan’s existing ranged weapons, bombs, and armor cost around 25% less.
- Corrected hero-specific skin tracking, healing progress, co-op bleedout deaths, and rewards on existing saves.
- Golden Age: defeat a boss as Valraven using only jump attacks.
- Jengi: collect 15 different Forbiddens as Elowen across all runs.
- Each hero unlocks their own Game Boy palette at The Wet Road’s waterfall. Also fixed progression issues affecting Chaos Strike and White Wolf.
Polish and fixes
- Rooms: added a skippable Flooded cinematic and improved wave triggers, navigation, landing collisions, and death zones across several rooms. Fixed Ceremony’s secret-door sequence and stranded enemies blocking wave completion.
- Bosses and enemies: fixed skipped Ronhak attacks, clone cleanup, boss phase transitions, mounted-enemy behavior, and several minion and despawn errors.
- Hero selection screen: added an Abilities rating, updated Darkblade’s and Elowen’s displayed ratings, and corrected Branok’s portrait direction. Also added a backdrop in the description field for legibility, and of course, we’ve added Darian to this screen too!
- Menus and controls: improved gamepad ownership and reconnection, keyboard prompts, hero selection, portraits, health bars, and unlock notifications. Confirming dialogue no longer causes accidental jumps.
- Graphics: added a dedicated Graphics Effects tab and Off, Low, Medium, and High scanline settings. Fixed settings persistence, bloom around menu text, and Options-menu positioning with CRT enabled.
- Audio and presentation: biome music continues between rooms, sound effects fade in after loading, and several missing or duplicated sounds are fixed. Added plenty of dialogue, animation, and localization improvements.
- Loading: improved asset reuse to reduce repeated loading work between rooms.
- Ultrawide: fixed display issues on monitors with a 32:9 aspect ratio.
Thanks for playing and sharing your feedback. We hope you enjoy meeting Darian and discovering what’s behind that secret door!
