Dev Blog: The Cultist and the Cosmic Horror

Porcelain Fortress

Dark tidings upon you!

Ever since the Cultist came out on top in the final role vote, the team has been hard at work preparing for the arrival of this crowd-pleasing ritualist. While we're not ready to reveal all quite yet, we can let you in on the design process of one of the role's mechanics: the Cosmic Horror.

As we teased in the role reveal, the Cultist will spend their time doing the bidding of a cosmic horror in hopes that their hard work will result in dark blessings from their patron. We didn't really have a specific monstrosity in mind when we designed the role, so we decided to make a few sketches to get the creative juices flowing.

As you can see here, despite the occult undertones, all of the designs lean more towards cute and funny rather than something truly horrifying. This is a lighthearted life simulator, after all. After some back and forth in the office we ended up going for option 2, as it's a strong and recognizable reference, and so cute to boot!

Now let's see it in color!

Who's an adorable little harbinger of the end times? You are! Yes you are!

So now that we've got the dark master of the cultist figured out, we need to see what this thing looks like as it grows up. A part of the role fantasy for the cultist will be to see this entity grow larger and more powerful as you do its bidding, so we had to see this thing grow.

As you can see, the result is pretty apt for a life simulator, as the horror goes through puberty before ultimately ending up spreading its eldritch lunacy across the world in a 9-5. Hang in there, buddy!

We'll be sharing more info on the Cultist and other stuff we have in the works very soon! Would you have chosen a different design for the horror? Let us know in the comments! If you've been playing Walk of Life and have any ideas, thoughts, or general feedback you wish to get across to us, leaving us a Steam review is a great way to support the game and let us know what you think we're doing right and what we could be doing better!
